At the London hair clinic, we ensure and believe that all our clients who come to us for hair replacement must be informed and take the appropriate measures, in regards to skin testing. Up to 95% of men who come to us will have their hair system attached with some form of adhesive, therefore we like to we ensure that we perform an adhesive skin test before any of our services is carried out.

Do you suffer from sensitive skin or allergies?

The main aim of carrying out a skin test is extremely important to determine and prevent possible risk or a reaction. Whether you think you have the best skin in the world or if you have never had any allergies before. At the London hair clinic, we take pride in ensuring that all necessary adhesives testing is done on a compulsory basis from the beginning. Not only does this reassure you but it applies to the National Health and Safety guidelines and regulations.

Whilst most of the glues and tapes used to attach your hair system are safe to use on the skin, some people may experience irritation so it is always safe to be cautious.

Performing a skin test, what does it involve?

We recommend skin testing every 6months, this is done by placing a small number of adhesive tapes or glues on an area where skin can be sensitive for example, behind the ear, on the inner arm or actually on the scalp if possible. We usually advised that the patch is left on overnight approximately 12 hours. Most reactions will take place within the first 12 hours, you will be able to indicate this.

Clients who have colour on their hair.

Many of our clients will have their own hair dyed to match the colour of the hair system, this is usually to cover grey hairs. A further skin test similar to the adhesive has to be carried out prior to any colour service being done. However, there are many different alternatives if you have an allergy.

What happens if you are allergic or experience some form of sensitivity to the adhesives or colour?

If it is apparent that you are allergic or sensitive to the glues or tapes used, please do not worry hair replacement can still work for you as there are alternatives. We will take extreme measures to ensure we use an adhesive that is hypoallergenic. (glues and tapes that contain products that are less harmful and highly likely to cause an allergic reaction.

Here are a few of the symptoms that may occur:

  • Itchy red or raised rash on skin
  • Swollen eyes, hands, feet or lips
  • Stomach cramp, vomiting or nausea
  • Swelling in the mouth – causing difficulties to breathing
  • Feeling faint or light headed

How do I know I am allergic?

So, what is the difference between an irritant reaction and an allergic reaction, it is important to understand the difference. An allergic reaction usually takes place a few days to develop, whereas a skin irritant occurs immediately.

If you feel you have suffered any of the above, we recommend seeing a Doctor or GP.
